Rules for baby girls
If you are a girl baby:
-You must wear pink at all times, otherwise, even if you are wearing a dress, people will ask if you are a boy.
- You CAN'T wear blue. God forbid. Everyone knows that only boys can wear blue.
-Don't even THINK about wearing anything sports related because as someone said to me once "But that's BOY clothing."
-Your stroller should be pink or purple or covered in butterflies. Only boys ride in blue or black strollers.
-You can't wear jeans (unless it's a jean skirt) because OBVIOUSLY boys wear jeans. Even if the stitching on the jeans is PINK.
-You must have hair, otherwise you must be a boy.
To clarify:
Hair = Girl
Bald = Boy
This explains why people do this to their children.
I hope I've made myself clear.
Obviously a boy:

Rock on, rebellious girl!
When Bug was born the nurses glued a bow to her head.

OMG! that link should come with a warning! i also puked on my keyboard...
i love how you dress Willa! i have a serious aversion to pink baby clothes and refuse to buy them for anyone! i'm all about purple, green and blue! and puppy dogs! i love puppy dogs!
Posted by: Charm | September 28, 2007 11:14 PM
i also really resent how kittycats are for girls, and dogs are for boys. DUMB DUMB DUMB. i know a little boy - now 7 - who loves cats and is not so crazy about dogs. he also does ballet and - nevermind. i don't know where this is going except:
the best moment of my life was when i saw an 8-year-old boy dressed in a full-on Tinkerbelle costume at disney in florida.
my mother gets really angry at those frou-frou bows. she says: a baby is beautiful without any decoration at all. why put those hideous things on your child?
and you have a most gorgeous baby! keep dressing the dollbaby in blue and puppies and no bows at all. she can obviously wear anything (or nothing?) and still look fabulous!

We dress Zoe in purple mostly... and if it's pink, it's hot pink. I just got tired of people saying she was a cute boy. Have you seen the headbands that have flowers the size of a baby head? Hilarious.

She's already bershon!!!
Posted by: Fatemeh | September 29, 2007 01:47 AM
those little girls on that site will grow up with squooshed heads.
willa's head, on the other hand, will be beautiful and perfectly shaped.

Your baby girl is so beautiful! She doesn't need any of those ugly head things. When my boy was a baby, everyone thought he was a girl even when he was wearing boys clothing! Oh brother!
Posted by: nathalie | September 29, 2007 10:32 AM
HAHAHAHAHA!!! Oh, that made me laugh.
Be warned, however, that dresses and all pink clothing will not help when the baby is bald. The bald overrules everything else, as I discovered with my daughter who was bald and then nothing but peach fuzz until she was nearly two.
I dressed her in whatever I wanted, but even when she was in all pink people said 'what a cute little boy'!
People are dumb.

Wow. When and if I have a girl, she's going to be SUCH a boy. Honestly the fact that I was dressed in so much pink as a kid is why I dislike the color now.
P.S. You have a very pretty little boy there.

I am counting on you to bail me out because if anyone calls my future hairless kid the wrong sex, it's ON.
Posted by: southernfriedgirl | September 29, 2007 03:56 PM
Good for you for breaking the "rules"!! (I hate sex-based stereotypes, particularly those which limit females' choices, with the fire of a thousand burning suns.)

OMG Torrie
Willa is SO beautiful.. I can already see a personality popping out there...
I remember clearly being in 5th grade. My hair was short more often than not when I was younger... I was in Shoney's with my Mom having dinner, and the waitress came to take our order and she said, and what would HE like?? (meaning Moi) - I hollered - I'm a GIRL! See, I just got my ears pierced!!
'course, that wouldn't mean nuthin' now, but, back in da day, it did.
weird.
Next time we're in NYC, I'm offering my babysitting services for a few hours!! :)

She is just so beautiful... .
I snorted ice cream up my nose at those urglee babbahs- love the one in the second row with the Elizabethan Collar-type ruff. What *were* they thinking??
And I really hate just how gender divided baby clothes seem to be now- I mean, it's either pink with frills or camo (seriously, you want to make your baby look like they're in the *army*?) Whatever happened to just plain bright reds, greens, yellows, funky stripes and spots? The boys clothes always seem to be ugly or macho and the girls' pukesomely purrty.

She's beautiful.
But of course, you rebelling against those stereotypes probably means she is going to love everything that is pink and frilly and girly in a few years. ;)

I love you for writing this with just the right amount of sarcasm. I don’t have kids, but whenever I buy clothes for someone else’s baby, I make sure to make it as genderless as possible.
Posted by: doahleigh | October 1, 2007 08:53 AM
I didn't have an ultrasound to find out the sex of my baby before he was born, so I looked everywhere for gender-neutral clothes. And you know? Nothing. Girls are princesses and boys like sports and THAT IS THAT. It's disgusting.

I agree with everything you posted.
Guess it's gonna suck for my daughter (I'm expecting a girl in about 2 months) and she's gonna be wearing ALOT of her brothers hand-me-downs.
Which means blue with puppies!!!
LOL!

We may have discussed this before, but Mrs. Shoe and I have both given each other permission to shoot the other if that headband crap's EVER considered.

She is such a little doll!!
I just have to say two things - my little guy has a sleeper in that same pattern. He wore it home from the hospital and I just LOVE it. If we are ever blessed with a little girl she will be wearing it too.
Two - even boys decked out in head to toe blue get that. Aiden wears every color of the rainbow but I know there have been times he was in a very "boy" color (maybe with baseballs or something on it) and I've had someone comment on how cute "she" was. Ugh. Just pay a little attention, that's all I ask. :-)

Dressed in pink, with a bow in her hair received this comment this past weekend "Oh, I am so glad that you brought your little boy back!" I didn't even bother to correct her at that point.

And now that I've seen the link, I'd like to add that we use small, discreet hair-clip bows that actually help to keep my six-month old's bangs out of her big blue peepers. I hate the headbands that look like garters and the ones that we've received as gifts have not ever seen the light of day!
Posted by: Audrey | October 1, 2007 04:25 PM
great post. it underlines the almost hysterical need we have to gender-identify babies. if there's any confusion (i.e., baby girls NOT in pink; baby boys NOT in sports, etc) folks start acting a bit kooky.

@diana - I remember being about 12yo, out at a flower show with my grandma. I was wearing a baseball cap to keep my hair off my face, and cos I was a bit of a tomboy. One of the stallkeepers mentioned soemthing to my grandma about her being lucky to spend some quality time with her grandson... I've never seen Grandma get so aggressive in protecting her granddaughter's honour!! Later that year, wearing the same baseball cap, I had a bloke handing out Gideon's bibles call me "sonny."
(I don't think I made it easy for them... Mum went through a period where she called me Ann, for androgenous)
Posted by: alivicwil | October 1, 2007 09:35 PM
Well, she looks like a girl to me, pink or not. Some babies have an oddly unisex look and I wish parents would make them more gender distinct when dressing them. Others, well, they, like Willa, have a definite obvious gender.
And she's so cute!
Posted by: Tanya | October 2, 2007 01:37 AM
Those people that made up and follow and enforce those rules? They are dumb.
Posted by: Farrell | October 2, 2007 12:46 PM
People are so ridiculous! Willa is perfectly angelic and doesn't need to look "girly" and should be able to wear whatever you want her to wear. And personally, I think it is obvious looking at her that she's a girl. Oh well - people are stupid.

I had a similar problem, but in reverse. My son Reece had dark curls and extremely long eyelashes and was forever referred to as 'she', even though he was always wearing blue!
Posted by: Cindy | October 3, 2007 05:35 PM
Holy fucking crap that's a cute little Mets fan.
Posted by: Jonathan | October 3, 2007 10:47 PM
In defense of the dress practices, most babies look like Truman Capote, so visual clues are helpful. Willa, however, is a stone cold cutie patootie. Anybody who looks at her and sees "boy" is not paying attention.

cutest baby boy I've ever seen!
Posted by: Annejelynn | October 4, 2007 08:42 PM
just found your blog, love it, you and I are both new mommies to girls 3 days apart, I love it to when you give your daughter a genderless name, so then you really throw people off.
we get called a boy so often as well...
I think they look like monkeys... :)
Posted by: Leslie | October 5, 2007 05:27 PM
I agree with you 100 percent. baby's are just unisex aliens we should be able to dress them however the hell we want!
Posted by: Gareth | October 7, 2007 07:16 PM
She is just beautiful; I can't get over her eyes!
Posted by: metalia | October 8, 2007 10:15 PM
OMG! I have the same problem. Everytime I take Miss Ali out someone asks, "How old is he?" One time I got asked this when she was wearing a jean skirt!

I never realized just how disturbing headbands are. That may have been the most horrifying photo gallery ever!
(and a gorgeous picture of your baby girl!)
Posted by: Amber | October 15, 2007 08:08 PM
OMG - you are so evil... I think I broke a rib laughing. You didn't have to include a link to that site. EVIL EVIL EVIL. LOL!!!!
Posted by: KiKi | November 20, 2007 09:51 PM
Thanks for that, your baby girl rules made me laugh out loud. I'm expecting my first (don't know what it is yet) and I hate the way all baby things are divided into boys things and girls things. Gender stereotypes are lame no matter what age they are aimed at!
